What to Do If You Are Accused

What if you are accused?

It's possible that a complainant could confront you directly, or you may hear about the complaint from another manager or from HR. Regardless of the source of the complaint, there are several things you should keep in mind.

The first thing you should do is take the complaint seriously. If HR is not yet involved, notify them immediately. If HR is already involved, you must keep them informed of anything related to the complaint that develops. You'll also need to change the behavior that gave rise to the complaint, even if you don't think it was harassment. It's extremely important that you avoid taking any retaliatory action against the complainant. Instead, respect the complainant and maintain confidentiality between you, the complainant, and HR.
